Let’s be honest. Finding the perfect shade of lipstick is a pretty brutal undertaking. By the time you “think” you’ve found a great shade, purchased it, taken it home and tried it on, there’s a very good chance that your new shade doesn’t look so hot once you see it under normal, non-department store lighting. By then, it’s open, used and non-returnable. Congratulations! You’re stuck with a brand new lipstick that you don’t want and won’t wear. Good luck finding some extra space at the back of your makeup drawer amidst your other beauty and cosmetics rejects.

1. First of all, choose the type or formula of lipstick you might need. Do you just need a simple all purpose lipstick or do you want a lipstick that reduces the lines in your lips? If you have thin lips you might want a lipstick that plumps your lips. If you are going out for the evening, you might want a long lasting lipstick that will not come off when you drink or eat.
2. After you have chosen the type of lipstick you want, you can then look at colors. For daytime, stick to neutrals or pale shades. If you are looking for an evening color, you will want to choose a darker shade than what you would normally wear. You can also get away with shimmery finishes and more dramatic lipsticks.
3. In addition to color, take into account your coloring or skin tone. If you have warmer toned hair and skin, you can pull off warmer shades like bronzes, corals and golds. You can wear warmer reds and pinks as well. If you have cooler toned skin, stick to reds and pinks with more of a bluish or purplish undertone.
Finally, remember that your lipstick should compliment your overall look. This means it should blend well with your outfit and the rest of your makeup – not over power it. Keep these tips in mind as you choose free makeup sample shades or test lipstick shades at the cosmetics counter.
